COUNTRY TOURS....Experience The Last Frontier

MT. HAGEN - WESTERN HIGHLANDS PROVINCE

Located in the wide expanse of the Wahgi Valley, Western Highlands Province is and important tea and coffee growing area. Several forest covered mountain peaks soar above the 4,000-meter mark, while the lower hills and valleys are grass covered.

The Wahgi people are careful gardeners and their neat village is often decorated with flowered paths and ceremonial parks. Although traditional dress is now rarely worn older men sometimes dress this way on market days and for special "sing sings"

Mt. Hagen is the capital, its streets always a bustling center of activity. With a population of 18,000 people, Mt. Hagen was named after a German administrator, Kurt von Hagen, in the 1890's. For many visitors, Mt. Hagen has all exciting frontier atmosphere.

The Saturday market is one of the biggest in Papua New Guinea. It is a crowded, colorful meeting place and trading venue, which attracts people from all over the province. The annual Mt. Hagen show is held in late July/early August, and provides an excellent opportunity to see different tribal groups at one gathering

The Western Highlands Cultural Center features a reconstructed village hut and exhibits an interesting display of artifacts and curios. Handicrafts are for sale at the center. Ah hours drive from Mt. Hagen, the Baiyer River wildlife sanctuary protects the largest collection of Birds Of Paradise in the world. The magnificent sanctuary set in the rain forest of the Baiyer Valley hosts the rare blue Bird of Paradise, gliding possums, tree kangaroo and over 80 species of butterflies. A hiking trek climbs through the forest to the top of a ridge where panorama of valleys and mountain peaks unfolds. Definitely a place for the camera enthusiast.
